More ink has been spilled on the career of France’s illustrious Emperor than perhaps any other character in history. But are we any closer to knowing the real man? Napoleon remains a deeply controversial figure, both in France and abroad - he was either a great and glorious commander of French armies or a relentless and unscrupulous butcher. Neither cliché is true or helpful, but what was the nature of the man – what motivated and drove him to prodigious feats of conquest? What were the reasons for his calamitous and tragic downfall?

While the details of Napoleon’s military career and campaigns are well-known and have been endlessly dissected, even before his death in 1821, the nature of his personality and inner life largely remains an enigma.

The series of talks uses the various locations of the events of the life of Napoleon and the military campaigns as a backdrop for a discussion of his life and loves, as well as the legacy he left behind…

There will be ten presentations of about forty-five minutes with time for questions at the end, presented with extensive slides and graphics in a relaxed, informal setting. A proposed outline of the ten topics to be covered follows, please note that these are all standalone talks, and while they do follow a course of events, you do not have to attend all 10 talks:
